Prevention System Quality Index

The 2023 index includes seven chronic disease risk factors and exposure domains that are commercial tobacco, alcohol, healthy eating, physical activity, environmental exposures (ultraviolet radiation, radon and fine particulate matter), occupational exposures (asbestos, diesel engine exhaust, radon and crystalline silica), and infectious agents (human papillomavirus and hepatitis B).

Highlights of the report

  • Provides evidence and data to inform the development of policies and programs to prevent chronic disease
  • Includes a review of the social determinants of health including income, food insecurity, housing and racism
  • Explores the burden of chronic disease on First Nations, Inuit, Métis and urban Indigenous peoples and identifies opportunities to address systemic health inequities
  • Many of the indicators in the report are stratified by sex, income quintile, racial group, immigration status and geography
  • Some indicators in the report show improvements, such as a decrease in smoking rates, and an increase in smoke-free social housing and better air quality. However, there are still opportunities to improve chronic disease prevention such as reducing food insecurity and limiting the availability of tobacco and alcohol
